Being laid off or otherwise losing one’s job is a tough experience. I’ve been through it, and it isn’t fun. But it doesn’t have to signal financial disaster either. Here are a few things you can do to help you through this difficult time.

  • Ask about a severance package. Often, when an employee has been laid off, there is some kind of compensation package that is offered. This may include a number of months of payment in a lump sum and an extension of benefits for a certain period as well
  • Ask about the payment of accrued paid time off. Even if there is no other compensation package, you may be entitled to receive payment for your unused sick, personal and/or vacation time
  • Investigate your rights to unemployment compensation through the state. It is fairly common that when a person’s job has been eliminated that they may be entitled to payments through the unemployment insurance program that all employers pay into.

It is also necessary to examine your budget at this time. With reduced or no money coming in, trimming the budget is essential. There are several things to consider here:

  • Stop any and all giving. You have to take care of the home front first
  • Stop any “extra payments” on debt. You need your money to go as far as possible. If at all possible, inquire about any forbearances or deferrals on consumer debt that may be available–use these only if necessary

  • Food: You need to eat
