Verdict
Mercury has an average score in customer service, although it’s excellent in resolving complaints and provides a decent number of discounts. For the most part, car insurance from Mercury is neither cheap nor expensive when compared to other insurers.
MoneyGeek evaluated the cheapest car insurance companies as well as the best car insurance providers across the U.S. to help you learn more about Mercury Insurance and other insurers in the market. You can also use our comparison tool to see how Mercury stands against other car insurance companies.
How Does Mercury Rank for Customer Service?
Mercury insurance does well in some aspects, not as well with others. Rates from Mercury are extremely affordable, whether they're for a teen driver or someone with a not-so-perfect driving record.
However, Mercury provides only the basics as far as policies go, and its customer satisfaction rating is below average.
Mercury could be for you if you’re looking for basic insurance at an affordable price.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
With consumers in mind, J.D. Power rates auto insurance companies by a number of factors with a five-star ranking system. J.D. Power ranked Mercury with a two out of five score.
Customer Complaint Ratio
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), gives every insurance company a ratio score. The national median is 1.00. So, a company that has a ratio of 2.00 has twice as many complaints as other insurance companies. In 2018, Mercury earned a customer complaint ratio score of 0.36, which is below the national median of 1.00.
Mercury Auto Insurance Quotes: How Much Does it Cost?
MoneyGeek gathered car insurance quotes from Mercury across 10 states where it sells insurance, and we averaged the quotes for our sample driver. Based on our analysis, the insurer is neither cheap nor expensive compared with other companies at an average rate of $1,622 per year.
In addition, we also found that Mercury has roughly average pricing for a sample driver seeking full coverage insurance or minimum coverage and for a driver with speeding tickets. However, its insurance is more expensive than average for young drivers.
Shop around and compare quotes from different companies to find the cheapest insurance offers. However, price shouldn’t be your only consideration when buying car insurance. Factors such as customer satisfaction and complaint ratios help determine an insurer’s overall value proposition.

Is Mercury Car Insurance Expensive or Cheap? Why?
Mercury’s insurance premiums are average for most drivers, including those with full coverage, minimum coverage and drivers with violations. However, the cost of insurance for young drivers is expensive compared to other insurers.
Insurance companies are seldom transparent about determining the cost of car insurance coverage. Like most insurance providers, Mercury charges more for full coverage and coverage for riskier drivers.
While Mercury's rates are neither cheap nor expensive, they do charge more for younger drivers, who are often seen as unsafe due to their inexperience.

Discounts Offered by Mercury That Can Help You Save
You can use discounts to save money with Mercury. The company provides most of the common discounts you’d expect, including safe driver, good student, multi-vehicle, anti-theft, bundling and pay in full. Unlike many of its competitors, it does not offer discounts for installing airbags or defensive driving.
Further, Mercury does offer an additional discount not usually available with most insurance companies. When you select to pay your premiums by way of automatic payments, you can take advantage of the related discount.

Does Mercury Offer Broad or Unique Coverage?
Mercury, like all auto insurance companies, offers standard coverages such as liability, comprehensive and collision insurance.
Policyholders also have the option to purchase two common add-on coverages: roadside assistance and rental car and travel reimbursement. However, Mercury does not offer several of the add-on coverages typically available, including accident forgiveness, new car replacement, gap insurance, deductible modification or better car replacement.
Mercury does offer some relatively uncommon add-on coverages such as original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and mechanical breakdown assistance.
OEM coverage ensures that original parts, not aftermarket products, will be used when repairing your vehicle. Mechanical breakdown assistance covers the cost of vehicle failures when your car breaks down, such as engine problems, transmission or faulty electrical system.
