How to Choose the Best Life Insurance in New Jersey

The best life insurance policy depends on how much coverage you need, how long you need it and how an insurer evaluates your individual risk.

  1. 1
    Calculate your coverage need

Add the income your household would need to replace, outstanding debts, mortgage obligations, education costs and final expenses. Subtract existing life insurance and assets specifically available to meet those needs. Use our life insurance calculator to quickly determine your coverage needs.

  2. 2
    Select a policy type

Term life is the cheapest option for temporary needs like income replacement, a mortgage or raising children. Whole and universal life provide lifelong coverage and build cash value, but premiums are much higher.

  3. 3
Check financial strength and complaint history

Review AM Best financial strength ratings and NAIC complaint indexes. Look for an A- rating or better AM Best rating before committing to a policy. An NAIC index below 1.00 indicates fewer complaints than expected for a company of its size.

  4. 4
    Compare underwriting options

A no-exam policy can speed up approval, but skipping the exam doesn't guarantee acceptance or the lowest rate. Healthy applicants can qualify for better pricing through full underwriting.

  5. 5
    Review conversion options and riders

If you're buying term coverage, check whether you can convert it to permanent insurance later without a new medical exam. Also compare riders for accelerated death benefits, waiver of premium, children and long-term care where available.

  6. 6
Verify the insurer is licensed in New Jersey

Before purchasing coverage, confirm the company is authorized through the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance.

New Jersey Life Insurance Laws

New Jersey's life insurance regulations fall under Title 17 of the New Jersey Revised Statutes, with oversight from the Department of Banking and Insurance. These rules set minimum consumer safeguards that apply to every policy sold in the state.

  • Free look period: You have 10 days after receiving a policy to cancel it for a full premium refund. Policyholders 65 and older get 20 days. Your coverage stays active during this window.
  • Grace period: If you miss a premium payment, your insurer must give you at least 30 days to pay before canceling the policy. Coverage remains active during the grace period, but any unpaid premium may be deducted from the death benefit if the insured dies before payment is made.
  • Contestability period: Insurers can't challenge or deny a claim based on application misstatements once a policy has been in force for two years, except for nonpayment of premiums. Intentional fraud gets no shelter under this provision.
  • Suicide exclusion: For the first two years from the issue date, policies can exclude suicide as a covered cause of death. After two years, suicide is covered under most New Jersey policies.
  • Claim payment deadline: Within 60 days of receiving proof of death, insurers must pay death benefits. If a claim investigation is required, the insurer must notify the claimant within 45 days, but any uncontested portion still must be paid within 60 days.
  • Guaranty association coverage: The New Jersey Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Association covers policyholders if their insurer becomes insolvent, up to $500,000 in death benefits and $100,000 in cash surrender value per insured life. How each insurer's premium rates compare to others in the market.

Our Review Methodology

MoneyGeek rates life insurance providers based on three important factors. Each company receives a score out of five points. We then use a weighted average of the scores to get a final score out of five total points:

  • Affordability (50%): Each insurer's premium rates get compared to others in the market.
  • Customer Experience (30%): Customer feedback and industry research shape the quality score for service, claims handling and overall satisfaction.
  • Coverage Options (20%): The variety and flexibility of available policies, including riders and customization features to suit different needs, get weighed here.

Our Sample Customer Profile

We used the following standard profile to collect quotes:

  • 40-year-old male
  • Nonsmoker
  • 5 feet, 9 inches tall, 160 pounds
  • Average health rating

We used this profile for all premium comparisons unless noted otherwise. We also collected quotes for different ages, genders, health ratings and locations to see how rates vary. This revealed pricing trends across term lengths and coverage amounts and showed which companies offer the best value for each customer type.
