Cheapest Life Insurance Without Medical Exam

Banner Life and Transamerica tie as the cheapest life insurance without a medical exam, averaging $41 per month for women and $50 for men. But the two carriers don't tie on customer experience. Banner Life has an NAIC complaint index of 0.16, well below the 1.0 industry average, while Transamerica's index is 3.86, nearly four times the industry average. For buyers choosing between the two on price alone, Banner Life delivers the same rate with a much better claims and service track record.

Penn Mutual rounds out the top three for both women ($42) and men ($51) but has the lowest NAIC complaint index in MoneyGeek's review at 0.05, well below even Banner Life's 0.16. For buyers who want to optimize for both price and customer experience, Penn Mutual is a strong choice.

IS A NO-EXAM POLICY RIGHT FOR YOU?

If you're in good health with no major medical history, a traditional term life insurance policy will cost less. No-exam coverage makes the most sense if you've been declined before, have a manageable pre-existing condition or need coverage approved in days rather than weeks.

Cheapest No-Exam Life Insurance for Smokers

In our analysis, smokers pay more than double the nonsmoker rates for no-exam policies. Banner Life holds its lead for female smokers at $133 per month, but its male smoker rate climbs to $193, a 286% increase over its $50 nonsmoker rate. Penn Mutual is the cheapest option for male smokers at $180 and carries the lowest NAIC complaint index among providers we reviewed at 0.05.

If you've quit smoking, wait at least 12 months before applying. Most carriers require 12 consecutive months without tobacco use to qualify for nonsmoker rates. Based on MoneyGeek's rate data, quitting cuts monthly premiums by more than half for 40-year-old buyers on a 20-year, $500,000 policy.

Cheapest No-Exam Life Insurance for Young Adults

MassMutual is the most affordable no-exam life insurance for young women at $18 per month, $9 less than Nationwide, the next-cheapest option. That adds up to $108 in savings per year for the same 20-year, $500,000 policy. MassMutual also holds the highest possible A++ AM Best financial strength rating and has a low NAIC complaint index of 0.08.

For young men, Nationwide has the lowest rates at $33 per month. Price differences between insurers are relatively small in this category, with just a $16 monthly gap between the cheapest and most expensive providers for men and a $21 gap for women.

Buying coverage in your 20s also helps lock in lower premiums before rates rise more sharply with age. On average, the same $500,000 policy costs about 40% more at age 40 than it does at 25.

Cheapest No-Exam Life Insurance for Seniors

Penn Mutual has the lowest rates for seniors by a wide margin in our analysis. Monthly premiums average $34 for 65-year-old women and $56 for men on a 10-year, $100,000 policy. Compared with Fidelity, the second-cheapest option, Penn Mutual saves women $360 per year and men $372 per year. Penn Mutual also has the lowest NAIC complaint index in our review at 0.05, making it one of the few insurers that combines the lowest rates with top customer satisfaction. Fidelity, which offers no-exam term coverage exclusively through Fidelity Investments' insurance arm, is the second-cheapest option for seniors but caps no-exam coverage at $250,000.

Most no-exam term policies cap eligibility at age 60 or 70, which limits options for older applicants. The five carriers in MoneyGeek's senior comparison all offer 10-year, $100,000 policies at this age tier, which covers final expenses and modest debt but won't replace years of income. Seniors who don't qualify for no-exam term coverage can turn to guaranteed acceptance life insurance, which accepts applicants up to age 85 but comes with lower coverage limits and higher premiums per dollar of coverage than term policies.

How to Get Cheap Life Insurance Without Medical Exam

No-exam life insurance costs more than traditional policies, but you can keep rates competitive by comparing multiple insurers and knowing which coverage type fits your situation.

    Compare Quotes from Multiple Insurers

Carrier rates vary more than most buyers expect for no-exam coverage. In our analysis of 16 insurers, the monthly rate spread for a 40-year-old woman on a 20-year, $500,000 policy ranged from $18 to $59, a $41 monthly gap for identical coverage. Get quotes from at least three carriers before deciding.

    smallCalculator icon
    Choose the Right Coverage Amount

Buy only the coverage your beneficiaries need to replace your income, cover debts and fund final expenses. A simple starting point is to multiply your annual income by 10 and add any outstanding mortgage or debt balance. If you have a $60,000 annual salary with a $100,000 mortgage, aim for $700,000 in coverage. MoneyGeek's life insurance calculator can help you refine that estimate for your specific situation.

    checkList icon
    Answer Health Questions Honestly

Answer every health question accurately. Misrepresentation can void your policy and leave beneficiaries with no payout, even years after the policy is issued. Common conditions like controlled high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes are often approved under simplified issue at higher premiums. More serious conditions like recent cancer treatment, heart disease or HIV may limit you to guaranteed acceptance coverage with lower limits and higher costs per dollar of coverage.

    boyThinking icon
    Apply at the Right Time

Your age determines your premium, and most no-exam insurers set rates based on your age at the time you apply. Rates increase 8% to 10% per year in your 40s and accelerate after 50. If your birthday is within 60 days, apply now rather than waiting.

    insurance2 icon
Match Your Policy Type to Your Health

Simplified issue policies require health questions but allow coverage up to $5 million at most carriers and cost less per dollar than guaranteed issue. Guaranteed acceptance skips all health questions but caps coverage at $25,000 and costs much more per dollar of coverage. Choose guaranteed acceptance only if you've been denied coverage because of a health condition. For everyone else, simplified issue delivers better value.

Average No-Exam Life Insurance Rates

Average monthly premiums for no-exam life insurance vary by age, gender and coverage amount. For a $500,000 policy, 40-year-olds pay an average of $50 per month for women and $63 for men.

The sharpest increase in rates in our analysis occurs between ages 40 and 50. A 40-year-old woman pays $50 per month for $500,000 in coverage, while a 50-year-old woman pays $112 for the same policy, a 124% increase. Men see a similar jump, with premiums rising from $63 at age 40 to $149 at age 50.

By age 60, premiums for the same coverage amount are roughly six times higher than at 40 years old. Buying no-exam coverage before your next birthday locks in a lower rate permanently. For a 40-year-old woman, a one-year delay on a $500,000 policy adds $4 to $6 per month or $48 to $72 per year for the full 20-year term.

Cheap Life Insurance Without Medical Exam: Bottom Line

Banner Life and Transamerica have the lowest no-exam life insurance rates for most 40-year-old buyers, with premiums averaging $41 per month for women and $50 for men. Penn Mutual is the cheapest for male smokers and seniors. It has the lowest rates for male smokers at $180 per month and leads the senior category by a wide margin. MassMutual is also worth considering for women under 30, offering the lowest rate in MoneyGeek’s analysis at $18 per month.

No-exam life insurance gets approved in days rather than weeks, but that speed costs more. If you're in good health and can wait two to four weeks, a traditional policy will cost less. Compare quotes from at least three insurers before deciding. In our analysis, the rate gap between the cheapest and most expensive providers for identical coverage exceeded $40 per month for some buyer profiles.

We modified the profile to capture rates by age (25, 40 and 65), gender and smoking status.
