Compare Travel Insurance Plans: Key Takeaways

Comparing travel insurance just got simpler. With dozens of companies offering unique plans, our side-by-side coverage comparisons and quotes help you find the right fit.

Compare travel insurance affordability. Travel insurance costs 3% to 18% of your total trip cost, with age being the main price driver when costs exceed 5% of trip cost. Expect to pay $75 to $200 for a $2,500 trip if you're under 50, $150 to $400 if you're 65 and $300 to $700 if you're 75 or older.

Compare coverage to get the right travel insurance plan. We recommend having trip cancellation and interruption, medical coverage of $50,000 to $250,000, evacuation coverage and a moderate level of baggage coverage. If you're planning riskier activities, like scuba diving, verify your plan covers those activities.

Compare Travel Insurance Plans Side by Side

We organized 42 travel insurance plans into three categories based on coverage levels and features to simplify comparison. The main differences between categories are medical coverage limits, evacuation amounts and additional features like "cancel for any reason" (CFAR) coverage.

Basic plans work for healthy travelers on standard trips under $5,000 who want essential protection at the lowest cost. Comprehensive plans provide the best balance of coverage and value for most travelers, especially trips between $2,500 to $15,000. Premium plans offer maximum coverage limits and specialized features for expensive trips, seniors or travelers with high-risk activities.

Basic Travel Insurance Plans Comparison

Basic plans cover trip cancellation and medical expenses at the lowest prices. They work best for healthy travelers on standard trips under $5,000. Expect $25,000 to $50,000 in medical coverage, which is fine for minor emergencies, but serious incidents requiring surgery or evacuation aren't covered.

How to Compare Travel Insurance

Comparing travel insurance gets tricky. Plans use different names for similar benefits, exclude different situations and price identical coverage differently based on your age, destination and trip details. Focus on these five factors when comparing plans. See our ranking of the best travel insurance.

We organized 42 plans from 13 companies into clear categories. You can see exactly how age and trip cost affect quotes. Also, see our guide to how travel insurance works and what it covers.

  1. 1
    Compare Trip Cancellation and Interruption

Trip cancellation reimburses 100% of nonrefundable costs if you can't travel for covered reasons like illness, job loss or severe weather. Standard plans cover 10 to 15 specific reasons. "Cancel for any reason" (CFAR) lets you cancel for any reason with 50% to 90% reimbursement.

Trip interruption pays for the portion of your missed trip, plus return costs if you come home early. Say you paid $3,000 for a 10-day trip but came home after six days. The insurance reimburses you for the four unused days (roughly $1,200). You'll want this for trips over $5,000 or longer than two weeks.

    • CFAR requires purchase within 10 to 21 days of the trip deposit
    • You must cancel 48+ hours before departure for CFAR benefits
    • Standard plans need qualifying cancellation reasons with documentation
  2. 2
    Compare Travel Insurance Medical Coverage

Emergency medical coverage ranges from $25,000 to $1 million. Most travelers need $100,000 to $250,000.

    • Get at least $100,000 medical for basic trips
    • $250,000+ works better for adventure activities
    • Primary coverage pays first, before your health insurance. Secondary coverage pays only after your primary insurer.
  3. 3
Compare Plans for Pre-Existing Condition Exclusions

Travel insurance plans exclude pre-existing medical conditions unless you buy a waiver within 10 to 21 days of your initial trip deposit. You must also be medically stable when buying coverage.

Lookback periods vary from 60 to 180 days. Definitions range from any medical attention to just symptom changes. Buy early if you have health concerns.

  4. 4
    Compare Additional Coverage Options

Baggage coverage protects lost or stolen items ($500 to $4,000 with per-item limits). Travel delay coverage reimburses expenses from covered delays ($100 to $200 per day). Some plans cover adventure sports like scuba diving and skiing. Rental car coverage provides collision protection.

    • Baggage claims require receipts and police reports for theft
    • Travel delays need a 5 to 12-hour delay to trigger coverage
    • Adventure sports and rental car coverage often require additional premiums
    • Rental car coverage may duplicate your existing auto insurance or credit card benefits
  5. 5
    Compare Quotes

Travel insurance costs vary by company for similar coverage. Get three to five quotes before buying. The biggest factors: trip cost, traveler age, destination, number of travelers and coverage terms. Age matters most for older travelers. A 75-year-old pays 3.5 to 4.9 times more than someone aged 20 to 50 for identical coverage.

*The quotes above are based on a traveler aged 20 to 50 with a trip cost of $2,500.

Popular tourist destinations have standard pricing. This includes European countries, Thailand, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

Greece, Turkey and Mexico cost 8% to 15% more to insure. Greece's remote island locations increase evacuation expenses, while Turkey's proximity to political instability raises costs.

India, Brazil and parts of Africa cost 15% to 25% more to insure. India's limited medical infrastructure means insurers often need to arrange medical evacuations to better-equipped facilities, driving up costs.

Travel Insurance Plan Comparison: Bottom Line

When comparing travel insurance, compare quotes for equal or similar protection. Prices vary by company for identical coverage, so getting multiple quotes can save you hundreds of dollars. Age, trip cost and destination all affect pricing. Buy within 10 to 21 days of your trip deposit for the best coverage options, including CFAR and pre-existing condition waivers.
