Safest and Most Dangerous Cities in America by Cost of Crime (2026)

Advertising & Editorial Disclosure

Crime affects communities in many ways, from medical expenses and property losses to criminal justice spending and lost productivity. Using the latest city-level crime data reported to the FBI and academic research on what different types of crime cost society, MoneyGeek estimated the annual cost of crime in 2026 dollars for cities across the country. We ranked 315 cities with populations over 100,000 by the cost of crime per resident and identified both the safest and most dangerous places in America. Cities are listed by city and state to avoid confusion where multiple places share the same name, such as Columbus, Georgia, and Columbus, Ohio.

This year's analysis includes better FBI crime data coverage. Cities excluded from earlier editions due to incomplete reporting now appear in the rankings, expanding the study's scope beyond previous years.

KEY FINDINGS
  • Carmel, Indiana, is the safest city in America, with an estimated annual crime cost of about $186 per resident.
  • Birmingham, Alabama, has the highest estimated cost of crime per resident at about $10,152, making it the most dangerous city in this year's ranking.
  • New York, New York, has the highest total annual cost of crime at about $13.9 billion per year, followed by Houston, Texas, ($9.3 billion) and Chicago, Illinois, ($8.7 billion).
  • Among major cities with populations over 300,000, a small group ranks high for safety, with lower crime costs per resident than other large metros. Irvine, California, leads large cities with a crime cost of $447 per resident.

Safest Cities in the US

MoneyGeek's ranking defines "safest" as the lowest estimated annual cost of crime per resident, not simply the lowest number of incidents. Using the latest FBI city-level crime statistics and inflation-adjusted cost-of-crime estimates, we identified the cities where crime imposes the smallest financial burden on residents and local economies. Many of these communities are midsize cities or suburbs in larger metropolitan areas with low violent crime and modest property crime rates.

Most Dangerous Cities in America

In this study, "most dangerous" refers to cities with the highest estimated annual cost of crime per resident, based on reported crime counts and peer-reviewed cost-per-offense estimates. These cities experience higher levels of serious violent crime and costly property crime, creating substantial financial burdens for residents and local governments.

HOW CRIME AFFECTS YOUR WALLET

Crime costs appear in police budgets, courtrooms and everyday financial decisions. Higher crime depresses home values and raises prices for home insurance, renters insurance and auto insurance. Compare your city's crime costs to evaluate your total cost of living and plan for long-term financial security.

Safest and Most Dangerous Large Cities (Population 300,000+)

Small, affluent suburbs often dominate lists of the safest cities, but many people want to know how major urban centers compare with one another. MoneyGeek identified the safest and most dangerous large cities with populations of at least 300,000 using the same crime-cost-per-resident metric.

  • Some large cities keep crime costs per resident low compared with their big-city peers, even though their total number of incidents exceeds smaller communities.
  • Other major metros have a double challenge: high violent and property crime rates and large populations produce very high total annual crime costs.

This large-city view gives residents a better way to compare major metropolitan areas. The overall ranking includes smaller cities and suburbs.

How MoneyGeek Calculated the Cost of Crime

To rank the safest and most dangerous cities in the United States, MoneyGeek used the latest available FBI city-level crime data, covering crimes reported in 2024. We analyzed 315 cities with populations over 100,000 that reported complete data for key violent crimes, including murder and rape. Each city is identified by city and state to distinguish between places that share the same name, such as Columbus, Georgia, and Columbus, Ohio.

Full List of 315 Cities and Crime Costs

The table below shows the full ranking of all 315 cities in MoneyGeek's analysis, from the lowest to the highest estimated annual cost of crime per resident. For each city, we report crime cost per capita, violent and property crime rates and the total annual cost of crime so readers can compare cities across the country.

How to read these rankings: A lower rank number indicates a lower estimated annual crime cost per resident. Cities with similar costs per resident may not be meaningfully different in everyday safety, and local context should always be considered.
