Even with a blemished record, you can find affordable car insurance by comparing quotes. Some insurers specialize in high-risk drivers and may offer more competitive rates.

Cheap Car Insurance: Buying Guide
Your coverage needs and driver profile determine the most affordable car insurance options. Explore the sections below for guidance on finding the right policy and the best rates for your situation.
How to Get the Cheapest Car Insurance
Car insurance companies calculate rates based on various personalized factors, which differ between insurers. As a result, rates can vary significantly for the same driver profile. Insurers also offer discounts, which may or may not apply to your situation.
Here are some tips to help you find the best rates:
- 1
Determine how much coverage you need
Figure out the coverage amount you need based on your budget and driving habits. Minimum coverage may be sufficient if you're on a tight budget. If you own a valuable car, full coverage offers extra protection. Pay-per-mile insurance might be a cost-effective choice, combining a small monthly fee with a per-mile charge.
- 2
Shop around
Request quotes from at least three companies on the same day to compare rates accurately. Since rates can fluctuate, using the same information ensures a clear comparison of available options.
- 3
Ask about discounts
Ask about car insurance discounts, but focus on finding a company with a low base rate. Discounts can help, but the cheapest coverage often comes from insurers with competitive base prices. Compare quotes from companies with and without discounts to get the best deal.
- 4
Raise your deductible
Choosing a higher deductible can lower your premium, but be sure you can afford it in case of an accident.
- 5
Bundle home and auto policies
Many insurers offer discounts when you combine multiple policies, like auto and home insurance, or even having multiple cars on one policy. Ask about multi-policy discounts when shopping around to see how much you could save.
- 6
Choose the right car
The type of car you drive can affect your insurance rates. Generally, safer, less expensive cars are the cheapest to insure.
Remember: the cheapest option isn't always the best. Ensure you have enough coverage to protect yourself financially in case of an accident.
Car Insurance Discounts
Getting discounts can further lower car insurance costs. Check offers from various insurance companies. Below are some common discounts to help you get started.
Defensive driving discount
Many insurers provide discounts to drivers who complete state or company-approved defensive driving courses.
Accident-free discount
Having a clean record may help you keep your car insurance costs low. Many insurance companies also offer discounts or rewards to safe drivers.
Multi-policy discount
Buying different types of policies, such as home and auto insurance, from the same insurer may qualify you for a bundling discount. Depending on the company, you may also find multi-vehicle discounts.
Telematics or usage-based discount
If your insurance company has a telematics program to keep track of safe driving habits, it may offer a discount to participating drivers. Drivers who don't drive much may also qualify for a low-mileage discount.
Pay-in-full discount
Paying your premiums upfront instead of in monthly installments may result in significant savings.
Green/hybrid car discount
Some insurance providers offer a discount for those driving an electric or hybrid car.
